Professor Sylvia Walby OBE

Sylvia Walby is Professor at Royal Holloway, University of London, in the Department of Law and Criminology, School of Law and Social Sciences. She holds the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation’s Anneliese Maier Research Award.  Sylvia is Fellow of the British Academy and Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences, UK. She is founding Co-Coordinator of the International Sociological Association’s Thematic Group 11 on Violence and Society; and was previously President of ISA’s Research Committee 02 Economy and Society. Sylvia chaired the Sociology Sub-Panel for REF 2021. She was the founding President of the European Sociological Association. She has previously held the UNESCO Chair for Gender Research at Lancaster University.  Books include The Concept and Measurement of Violence against Women and Men (with colleagues) (Policy Press, 2017), Globalization and Inequalities: Complexity and Contested Modernities (Sage 2009), The Future of Feminism (Polity 2011), and Crisis (Polity 2015). Her next book will be Trafficking Chains: Modern Slavery in Society (with Karen Shire) (Policy Press 2024).
